Sums of Dirichlet characters have occupied an important place in 20th century analytic
number theory,
but in the past five years there have been several breakthroughs in the
subject. I will discuss some of the
history and motivation, as well as recent progress on
maximal magnitudes of character sums: upper bounds,
omega results, and distribution of values.
