Akhenaton (Amenhotep IV) and Nefertiti

Amenhotep IV took the name of Akhenaton, adorer of Aton; his reign lasted for about 17 years.
During his reign, he tried to impose gigantic changes in Egypt.
He tried to move the capital city to the city of the sun Amarna which he had build on purpose far in the desert,
and he tried to change the religion of the entire country to adoration of the sun.

To some extent, he succeeded during his lifetime, but after his death the succeeding Pharaoh
(Tutankhaton, the young husband of Akhenaton's third daughter Ankhesenpaaton -- note the "aton")
was obliged to change his name to Tutankhamon and return to reign in the former capital,
leaving the desert city of Amarna to fall to ruins.

Akhenaton was married to the beautiful Nefertiti who became blind (possibly with too much sun-gazing)
and they had seven daughters, whom they adored, and who were personally trained in sun-worship by their father.

When Nefertiti retired to her apartments and ceased to take part in public life,
she was replaced in the public ceremonies by her lovely eldest daughter, Meritaton.

Meritaton was married to Smenkhkare, who was to be the next Pharaoh
(and possibly he co-reigned with Akhenaton for some months). But he died at the age of only 20.
