Uniqueness of tangent planes and (non-)removable singularities at infinity for collapsed translators

  • Résumé : We show that mean curvature flow translators may exhibit non-removable singularities at infinity, due to jump discontinuities in their asymptotic profiles, and that oscillation can persist so as to yield a continuum of subsequential limit tangent planes. Nonetheless, we prove that as time t → ± ∞, any finite entropy, finite genus, embedded, collapsed translating soliton in ℝ3 converges to a uniquely determined collection of planes. This requires global analysis of quasilinear soliton equations with non-perturbative drifts, which we analyze via sharp non-standard elliptic decay estimates for the drift Laplacian, implying improvements on the Evans-Spruck and Ecker-Huisken estimates in the soliton setting, and exploiting a link from potential theory of the Yukawa equation to heat flows with L data on non-compact slice curves of these solitons. The structure theorem follows: such solitons decompose at infinity into standard regions asymptotic to planes or grim reaper cylinders. As one application, we classify collapsed translators of entropy two with empty limits as t → ± ∞. This is joint work with E. S. Gama and F. Martín.

    Regularity for stable phase transitions

  • Résumé : We will discuss recent progress in the regularity for stable solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation, with a focus on the connections with minimal surface theory and two influential conjectures of De Giorgi and Yau. Part of this talk is based on recent joint work with Joaquim Serra which classifies all stable solutions to Allen-Cahn with bounded energy density in four dimensions.

Ancient solutions to free boundary mean curvature flow

  • Résumé : We will discuss rigidity results for ancient solutions to the free boundary mean curvature flow in manifolds with convex boundary. In particular, we will show that any free boundary minimal hypersurface of Morse index I admits an I-parameter family of ancient solutions that emanate from it. Moreover, among ancient solutions that backward converge exponentially fast to the minimal hypersurface, these exhaust all possibilities. Additionally, we will show how to construct a smooth free boundary mean convex foliation around an unstable free boundary minimal hypersurface. As an application, we use it to provide a more detailed geometric description of mean-convex ancient solutions that backward converge to that minimal surface. This is joint work with Giada Franz.

Surgery for the mean curvature flow in higher codimension

  • Résumé : The mean curvature flow offers a powerful mechanism for evolving extrinsic geometries into canonical forms. However solutions are subject to finite-time singularity formation. A profound problem, with many potential applications, is to reveal the geometric information encoded in these singularities. I will discuss work with Huy Nguyen in which we construct a flow with surgery for submanifolds of higher codimension under a natural curvature pinching condition. The key new contribution is fine control on singularities, allowing for them to be removed, after which the flow can continue smoothly. The construction has topological consequences.

Regularity of conformal structures and applications in geometry

  • Résumé : Given a Riemannian manifold $(M^n,g)$ with a metric of rough regularity, is it possible to deform it into a smooth Riemannian manifold via a conformal diffeomorphism? The aim of the talk is to give a precise answer to this question, to relate it to the Yamabe problem for rough metrics, and to show some applications in conformal geometry and general relativity. In particular, we establish global regularity results for constant scalar curvature metrics, conformally flat metrics, and static spacetimes. This is based on joint work with Rodrigo Avalos and Albachiara Cogo.

Singular self-dual connections on asymptotically hyperbolic spaces

  • Résumé : A conformally compact manifold is a complete Riemannian manifold with asymptotically negative curvature and with smooth compactification. We discuss the Yang–Mills equations in this geometric context. It turns out that one can consider “standard” (i.e. smooth up to infinity) solutions, or solutions with a more complicated singularity (a “Nahm pole”) at infinity. We discuss a perturbative result in the standard case, along with a more complicated boundary value problem for singular instantons in dimension 4.

What does the Alexander polynomial know about minimal surfaces?

  • Résumé : Let L be an oriented link in the 3-sphere. We will think of the 3-sphere as the ideal boundary of hyperbolic 4-space H^4. My talk will be about trying to count the number of oriented minimal surfaces in H^4 which have L as their ideal boundary. Firstly, I conjecture that this is a topological invariant of the link L. In other words, the number of minimal fillings doesn’t change under isotopies of the ideal boundary. Secondly, I conjecture that the number of genus g fillings of a link with k components gives the coefficient of z^{2g-1+k} in the Alexander polynomial of L. I will explain why I believe these conjectures, why I find them exciting, what has been proved so far, and what remains to be done. If there is time I will also discuss a version of the conjecture relating the HOMFLYPT polynomial to counts of minimal surfaces.

Introduction aux espaces de configuration des variétés

Area Variations for Lagrangian and Legendrian Immersions Analytical Challenges and Geometric Questions

  • Résumé : We will present some aspects of the geometry of surfaces which are critical points of the area among Lagrangian immersions in a Kähler manifold, the so called Lagrangian and Hamiltonian stationary surfaces. We will go through the questions which have motivated this variational problem and describe some geometric conjectures attached to it. Then we will move to the analytical difficulties of studying the variation of area under pointwize Lagrangian or Legendrian constraints. We will then come to a recent work in collaboration with Alessandro Pigati in which we are proving that surfaces which are critical points of the area under Legendrian constraint, that is surfaces which are everywhere tangent to a non integrable plane distributions and critical point of the area under this sub-riemannian constraint, are smooth away from isolated conical singularities. We will then come to the still mysterious problem relative to the location of these conical singularities and explain why it is relevant to fundamental questions in differential geometry which have to do with the realization or not of Lagrangian homology classes by calibrated surfaces. Finally, if time permits, we will explain another motivation to study this problem in relation to the Willmore conjecture in arbitrary co-dimension.

Isoperimetric Inequalities on Manifolds with Asymptotically Non-Negative Curvature

  • Résumé : In this seminar, I will examine the validity of the isoperimetric inequality on manifolds with asymptotically non-negative sectional curvature. After an overview of the current state of the art on the problem, I will discuss the ABP method, originally introduced by Cabré to prove the isoperimetric inequality in Rn, and later refined by Brendle for the case of non-compact Riemannian manifolds characterized by non-negative Ricci curvature and positive asymptotic volume ratio. Finally, we will explore how this approach can be adapted to prove isoperimetric inequalities even in the presence of a small amount of negative curvature. The results presented are part of a joint project with Stefano Pigola, Michele Rimoldi, and Giona Veronelli.

Green kernels, Spectral splitting theorems and the topology of minimal hypersurfaces

  • Résumé : In this talk, we will study the behaviour of stable (or δ-stable) complete minimal hypersurfaces in Euclidean space and, more generally, in manifolds Mn+1 with non-negative sectional curvature. Are they all totally geodesic for small enough n? What is their topology? We will discuss some new tools discovered in joint works with X. Cabré, G. Catino, P. Mastrolia and A. Roncoroni. The guideline is that stable minimal hypersurfaces in ambient spaces with Sec ≥ 0 are an example of manifolds with spectral Ricci lower bounds, a class of spaces for which we provide a generalization of Cheeger-Gromoll's splitting theorem and sharp pointwise gradient estimates for the Green kernel. Among the applications, we get a new proof of the Stable Bernstein Theorem in 4 and a characterization of the 3D-catenoid in 4.

    Eigenvalue optimisation and minimal surfaces

  • Résumé : Given a Riemannian surface, the study of sharp upper bounds for Laplacian eigenvalues under the area constraint is a classical problem of spectral geometry. The particular interest in this problem stems from the surprising fact that the optimal metrics for such bounds arise as metrics on minimal surfaces in spheres. For surfaces with boundary a similar story connects Steklov eigenvalues with free boundary minimal surfaces in balls. In this talk I will describe the general idea behind this correspondence and survey recent exciting developments in the field.

Optimal quantitative stability of the Möbius group of the sphere

  • Résumé : In this talk I would like to discuss quantitative stability aspects of the class of Möbius transformations of the sphere among maps in the critical Sobolev space (with respect to the dimension). The case of sphere- and R^n-valued maps will be addressed. In the latter, more flexible setting, unlike similar in flavour results for maps defined on domains of R^n (as for instance in the early works of Reshetnyak), not only a conformal deficit is necessary, but also a deficit measuring the distortion of the sphere under the maps in consideration, which is introduced as an associated isoperimetric deficit. The talk will be based on previous works in collaboration with Stephan Luckhaus and Jonas Hirsch, and more recent ones with Xavier Lamy and Andre Guerra.

Spherical curvature lines from holomorphic maps

  • Résumé : Minimal and constant mean curvature (CMC) surfaces in all space forms belong to the wider class of isothermic surfaces. The latter are characterized by the existence of conformal curvature line coordinates. Controlling global properties of general isothermic surfaces is a challenging and often a hopeless endeavour. However, the additional requirement of a family of spherical curvature lines has proven helpful in this regard and has produced many notable examples. These include Wente tori, free boundary/capillary minimal and CMC solutions, as well as isothermic tori leading to compact Bonnet pairs.
In this talk, we will present a novel construction method for isothermic surfaces foliated by a family of spherical curvature lines. This method, called lifted-folding, allows to generate these surfaces from specific holomorphic maps, providing good control over certain global properties. The presented ideas are applicable to discrete and smooth surfaces.

From phase transitions to minimal submanifolds in low codimensions.

  • Résumé : Proving existence of minimal submanifolds (i.e. critical points of the area functional) in various settings has been one of the driving forces of the development of modern calculus of variations, and geometric measure theory, with remarkable applications in differential geometry. In the 1960s Almgren developed a far-reaching technique to prove existence of (measure theoretic versions of) these objects. While effective, Almgren’s technique was notoriously complex which prompted the emergence in recent years of an alternative PDE-based method. The underlying idea is to construct minimal submanifolds as limits of nodal sets of critical points of functionals arising from the gradient theory of phase transitions and the theory of superconductors. After starting with a general overview, I will explain how the work of my collaborators and I fits into the broader picture. In particular, we will start with the Allen-Cahn functional and the codimension one theory discussing the construction of free boundary minimal surfaces, i.e. minimal submanifolds meeting the boundary orthogonally. We will then move to higher codimensions (specifically codimensions 2 and 3), where the theory is much less developed. We will introduce the Yang-Mills-Higgs functionals, in both the abelian and non-abelian settings. In particular, we will focus on what happens to their gradient flows, and their variational properties. I will highlight other successes of this theory, and point to some open problems along the way. The content of this talk is based on joint works with Martin Li, Lorenzo Sarnataro, Alessandro Pigati, and Daniel Stern.
